Clock in/out, breaks, weekly totals
- Time at work
- 8:45 (8:30 AM – 5:15 PM)
- Break
- 45 min
Rules used: US Fair Labor Standards Act (40-hour week, 1.5× overtime) and California Labor Code § 510 · Updated Oct 21, 2026
Enter a start and an end time, take off your breaks and get the hours worked in hours:minutes and decimal hours. Night shifts past midnight are handled automatically.
How to use the Hours Calculator
- Type the start and end time (830, 8:30 or 17:15) and press Enter; tap AM or PM to switch.
- Enter your unpaid break in minutes; add a second break if you took one.
- Read the hours worked and the decimal value for payroll; add your hourly rate to see the day's pay.
How to calculate hours between two times
Turn both times into minutes after midnight, subtract, and convert back. 8:30 AM is 510 minutes, 5:15 PM is 1,035 minutes: 1,035 − 510 = 525 minutes = 8:45. Minus a 45-minute lunch leaves 8:00 (8.00 hours).
If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift crossed midnight: 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is 8:00.
Work hours calculator for a whole week
For several days, use the time card calculator: it adds the days, splits overtime and prints a weekly timesheet.

Frequently asked questions
How many hours is 9 to 5?
9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours at work. With a 30-minute unpaid lunch it is 7:30 hours worked.
How do I calculate a night shift?
Enter it as it is, for example 7pm to 7am. Because the end is earlier than the start, the calculator adds 24 hours: 12 hours at work.
Are breaks paid?
Federal law does not require breaks. Short rest breaks (5–20 minutes) that an employer gives must be paid; bona fide meal breaks of 30 minutes or more can be unpaid. Several states require meal breaks.
